SALUKI INTERNATIONAL
Plans Underway for Popular Saluki Meet
27 MARCH 2008

In less than two months Saluki will be hosting its popular Saluki International meet at Shea. Each year the meet attracts over 400 athletes from around the Midwest because it offers a good indoor, long course racing opportunity early in the summer season. Entry, for teams wishing to participate, opens on 9 April.

The International is also the Saluki Parent Work Requirement meet for the Spring training session. Online sign ups for the various jobs will begin sometime in mid-April.

Let's Keep the Tech Suits With The Senior Swimmers
by JOHN LEONARD

The last two weeks I have been at our LSC Junior Olympic Meet and our LSC “Division II” meet, which is a nice way of saying, “the last B meet where you can qualify for Junior Olympics”,  without making any of our supposedly delicate children swoon upon hearing that they are in a “B” meet (but that’s another story).

One of the most disturbing trends that I have seen is age group swimmers, particularly 12 and unders and 10 and unders, in the new hi-tech suits made by all the swimsuit companies, in prelims and finals of these local meets. more »

SALUKI AWARDS
Racing Teamers Recognized
17 MARCH 2008

The Saluki Racing Team gathered in Herrin last night to recognize the efforts of all team members during the recently completed 2007-2008 season.

Saluki also inaugurated a new award that recognizes overall and significant contributions to aquatics in southern Illinois. Receiving the initial award were Dr. and Mrs. Edward Shea. In addition to numerous activities related to his position with Southern Illinois University, the late Dr. Shea founded the organization that would eventuallyClay Kolar presenting award to Mrs. Ruth Shea become the Saluki Swim Club in 1960. He stayed involved in various capacities until his death in 2003. Edward Shea contributed as a coach, consultant, and later as an avid Masters athlete and supporter of club activities.

No matter what activity Dr. Shea was involved in though he always made it clear that he could not do it but for Ruth, his wife, providing help and encouragement every step of the way. Saluki Swim Club is pleased to recognize the significant contributions to aquatics in southern Illinois by Dr. and Mrs. Edward Shea.

Confessions of a Neophyte Official
by ROBIN YUCUS

It’s not as hard as you think to become a USA Swimming Official; it’s not as easy as it looks, either. While these comments may seem at odds with one another, I’m convinced that they’re equally accurate. more »

Gator Long Course is Earlier This Year; Saluki Urged to Register
10 MARCH 2008

The Gators have modified their long course meet format and moved it about 3 weeks earlier on the calendar for 2008. This makes much more sense for our long course meet schedule and will place their meet about a month before our own International meet in May. We have heard that other teams are also excited about the change in date which may make the meet hard to get into unless we send our entry early. If you would like to be entered in the Gator Long Course Kick Off please register. Our deadline to register is Saturday, 22 March.

Playing Favorites
by JOHN LEONARD

One day a few years ago, a club board member accused me of "having favorites" on our club team. Several other parent board members nodded their heads in agreement. The implication was that this was a terrible sin. When I was a younger coach, I thought it was terrible also. And he was right. I did have favorites. more »

Practice Changes Go Back to Graphic Presentation
04 MARCH 2008

Because of the recent flood of practice changes due to weather events and coaching schedules HQ has determined that the old graphic display of weekly practice changes worked better than the simple text listings.

The display lists each day of the week with a color coded date representing the changes for that day. GREEN means there are no changes and we are following the regular schedule. RED means no practices. ORANGE means that there are changes to some or all groups.

Bell, Dutton Final in 50 Free; Relay Eclipses Entry Time
01 MARCH 2008

In a cascade of serendipitous events Braci Dutton squeaked into the 'C' final and Elizabeth Bell moved up from the 'C' to 'B' heat. Both Dutton (28.6) and Bell (28.2) turned in personal best times in the prelims to get to the final. In the evening Bell continued to improve and finished with a 27.8.

Earlier in the day the Saluki 4 x 100 Medley of Dutton, Maria Kolmakova, Bell and Caitlin Boren slashed 4 seconds from their previous best with Boren turning in a furious final leg. The meet concludes tomorrow.
